September 2025 sees the start of the 70th Anniversary season of meetings of the Torbay Astronomical Society. The Torbay Astronomical Society has welcomed many distinguished speakers during its lifetime: Patrick Moore was an early supporter and Honorary Life Member, Heather Couper opened the observatory at Torquay Boys’ Grammar School and TV personality, Adam Hart-Davis have all visited multiple times. Many other academics, observers, authors and presenters from within the field of astronomy have also delivered lectures to the society.
Nowadays, the society meets at Torquay Boys’ Grammar School (TBGS) where the observatory is located. In our anniversary programme we have engaged a number of high profile speakers including Professor Chris Lintott of the BBC Sky at Night pr ogramme, who is the society’s Patron, having been a junior member when he attended TBGS, and two other TBGS old boys Will Gater, an up and coming presenter and author and Professor David Southwood who was the Head of Science Missions for the European Spa ce Agency and a former President of the Royal Astronomical Society.
