Where and When do we Meet?

The TAS generally holds two meetings per month through the astronomical 'season' from September to April.

One meeting per month is primarily an 'observational' event. The other monthly meeting is a 'speaker' event.

All meetings are held on Thursday evenings at: Torquay Boys' Grammar School, Shiphay Manor Drive, Torquay TQ2 7EL.

For directions to TBGS please see the map on this page.

Both observational and lecture meetings commence at 7.30pm and finish just before 10pm.

We welcome non-members at all of our meetings. Non-members are asked to pay a small visitor's fee which is fully refundable against any subsequent membership fees.

Observational Evenings

Observational meetings are practical and informal, involving basic astronomy using a variety of equipment; informal mini-lectures; questions and answers; video, photo and slide presentations, etc.

For observational meetings we meet in room PL4, go through the main gates and go all the way down to the bottom near to Shiphay Manor. On your right there will be a set of double gates you need to go through these. Full directions can be found here.

Our observational evenings in particular offer an excellent opportunity for younger visitors to experience the night sky 'close up' - often for the first time. Just make sure they've done their homework first!

We meet even if it is cloudy and therefore impossible to view the sky, filling the time instead with a variety of informative short talks given by members.

Speaker Evenings

Speaker evenings (A.G.M. excepted) comprise an illustrated talk from an expert speaker, informal discussions and observational reports, etc.

Speaker evenings are held in the Forum. This can be found by going into the main reception, then turning right and turning right again, walk down to the bottom of the corridor and you should set a set of double doors on your right, the first door will be The Forum.

The maps on this page show the route, and signposts should be out to help direct you.
